OK so if you’re going to make money online, in most cases, aside from getting an email address, the first thing you are going to need is a place to publish your content. You can publish for free or you can pay for your own web site. Highly knowledgeable people (like my wife and I) can even open a web store completely for free. Each execution has its own advantages and disadvantages. You could use revenue sharing sites to publish your content for free and get paid to do so. The main drawback is that you don’t fully own the content there so you can’t profit from its ownership much beyond the basic sharing. You can’t reap a full pay day from the sale of the site and its content because you don’t own it. That’s ok if all you are publishing on those sites is mainly junk. If you plan on publishing content that is worth anything, then you will want to publish on a web property that you own. Now that is not to say that you can only publish on one or the other, you can in fact publish on both to achieve the same goal. The only real problem with that approach is that the content sharing sites are getting much better at keeping their patron web surfers on their site which, naturally means that you will get less and lees traffic referred from those sites over time. That said, using those sites as a launching point or traffic generation tool is still and will likely continue to be a good idea.

Now what I mean by your own web site is not one of those ‘sell our stuff and we will set up the web site for you’ type deals. Those are typically accompanied by a large up front payment to them, some form of contract and, you guessed it, you don’t own the content. What I mean by own your own site is more like, go to a domain registrar like godaddy.com, create an account and register a domain, with a relevant name to your offering, for about $10 or so, then pick a hosting pack age with them or different reputable host offering fantastico or installatron.

Installatron and Fantastico are both examples of hosted script programs. Each of these hosted script programs contains dozens of subscripts. Some script examples are such notable programs as WordPress, Magento and, various other Internet applications. Each of these applications is free and known as a one click install. While it may take more than one click to install any of these programs, they are nonetheless extremely easy to install for most user levels.

Now you need to create a web site with that account. Probably the fastest and easiest way to create a website is to use WordPress. WordPress is an excellent blogging software and is versatile enough to be used as a simple squeeze page or a free will and e-commerce website. While familiarizing yourself with the backend or, administrative interface of WordPress may take some time, it is well worth the effort to get to know the application. There really may be no easier way to get a website up and running than with the use of WordPress. Should you find that your user level is insufficient to run the set up properly, when using a reputable host, you can certainly contact their support department and have them set it up for you.

The next thing you are going to need is a payment gateway. A payment gateway essentially is a way to take the money from the prospect and move it into your merchant account. They take many forms and can vary from free for minimal use to expensive for high volume. A familiar and easy to use free payment gateway is PayPal. PayPal Pro is also a very good paid gateway service. Installing your payment gateway may be a bit tricky. In most cases you will more than likely need to check with support for both your cart provider and your gateway provider in order to get the two to interact correctly. A few cart and gateway providers, like Magento used with Paypal as well as many others, will interact quite easily right out of the box.

The final thing you will need is a product to sell. These can take any form from eBooks to physical products and services. As described earlier, you don’t even need to stock these products. In the case of affiliate sales, you may directing your prospect to the affiliate site during the purchase process. After that, what you will need is traffic and then, somewhere to put all that money you will be making.

All that said, before you worry about legal documents, logos or a website layout, take time to plan and dream. There are literally millions of items that can be sold online, don’t try to sell them all. Look at your interests. If you love baseball, find a niche market related to that you build a business on.
