One of the most important parts of of having a site is having visitors stop by. WIthout traffic your site is essentially worthless.So what’s the optimal way to get traffic to your website?  There are only 2 types of web traffic. Paid traffic and free traffic. Meaning, you can either just buy traffic or you can get free traffic to your site.  

If deciding to pay to get people to your web site,you can use services like Microsoft adCenter and models referred to as Pay Per click.  So,what happens here is that you tell Google,for example, how much you want to pay for each visitor.  Depending on how fierce the competition you might end up payng quite a bit or a not much per click. From a few cents to several dollars. So obviously it can add up quick. Still people do it beacuse it’s easy, constant and usually precidtable traffic. This model works at getting people to your site.

Another example of a technique is the banner and paying for impressions model. In this case you don’t spend per click,you buy a certain number of impressions usually measured in CPM – Cost Per Thousand.  And there are  various ad networks out there that you can join and upload your banners and pay regardless of how many clicks for the determined number of impressions.  In this particular technqiue you might get a ton of visitors or none at all.

The thing about paying for traffic is that you should really test the results and keep an eye on the process,otherwise you might just be needlessly spending your ad budget.

Now, another option when it comes to getting visitors to your site is getting Free traffic.  Free traffic can come from the search engines which requires SEO know-how. Traffic can also come from other websites.  Using linking strategies is a helpful way of getting visitors. Several other ways of getting free traffic might be things like writing articles and submitting them to specific article directories. Also, leaving meaningful comments on social sites like blogs, forums, video sites with a link back to your website can also help get more free traffic.

So there  are many different ways to  get trafficto your web site.  And really both ways free and paid, should be implemented and tested to see which one works best for your particular website.
