Twitter Add On for FireFox Shootout

By Jim Corbett

Comparing 3 Twitter Add-ons for The FireFox Web Browser

Tweet Your Day Away Directly From Your Web Browser Sidebar

tweetEvery good web marketer knows the importance of utilizing social media. Being able to get your message out to a large audience quickly and inexpensively is of paramount importance to any well run internet marking campaign. With it’s ability to reach hundreds of thousands of your subscribers in an instant, it’s no wonder that twitter has become the dominant force in this regard. The only real problem I’ve encountered with twitter is a real inability to have the functionality of twitter.com in a streamlined, accessible and user friendly interface. In this little shoot out, we will have a look at what I believe to be the most the convenient way to tweet, retweet, favorite and message, all from your sidebar.

The 3 FireFox add-ons we will be looking at today are;

  1. TwitKit
  2. TwitterFox
  3. Twitbin

Twitkit

Now first off, after several attempts to get Twikit to work, it never did, unfortunate because it did look promising. That leaves us only the two remaining contenders.

Twitterfox

The Twitterfox extension adds a tiny icon on the status bar which notifies you when your friends update their tweets. Also it has a small text input field to update your tweets. With support up to FireFox 3.1b3, Twitterfox allows you to:

  • Copy
  • Re-tweet
  • Open this tweet in new tab
  • Delete tweet

all from a context menu next to each tweet. You can also auto extract is.gd and bit.ly links, mark all as read and, create an in-reply-to-status-id parameter for status updates. In fact, the only thing I don’t like about this FF add-on is it’s inability to work in the sidebar. Should you be one who finds that you don’t want to part with a current sidebar offering, this may be the twitter add-on for you. If that’s the case then go ahead and Install Twitterfox Now!

Twitbin

Obviously my preference, Twitbin is not only highly functional but very professional in appearance and, it is also well supported. Narrated by Brian from Infinimedia, Twitbin has been kind enough to make available a handy video, hosted with Vimeo, it describes Twitbins functions.

The only thing I think Twitbin could use is pause function. There are so many messages flying past that if I want to focus on one, I have to wait until the update period is over then go back and scan through messages to find the one I want. Otherwise, I think Twitbin is an excellent application and you should Download It Right Now!

Okay – this is way over my head LOL!!! I’m lucky just to be ON Twitter :) Seriously though, this made my day – and I am resigned to just muddle through life living in total “Twitter” ignorance ;)
