You don’t need to be Techie to Create a Website…

By Renee

These days, everyone is scrambling to claim their little piece of internet real estate. Whether you are an aspiring writer or the owner of a brick and mortar business, marketing experts have been saying for years that if you’re not online you are going to be left behind. Most people will look to the internet first to find information, news, maps, directions, entertainment and shopping ideas. If you want to spread the word about a club you’re a member of, or sell some cool clothing you made to people all over the world, you’re going to have to learn how to create a website.

If you think that the only people who can build a website are graphic designers and software engineers, you’re in for a surprise. Advances in user friendly technology have made it possible for anyone to learn the basic skills that are needed to build a website with no coding, all on their own. If you think that a personalized website is exactly what you need to start getting your message out there, or give your business an online presence, then you should keep just a few simple guidelines in mind. These guidelines will help you progress through the process faster and stay ahead of your competition in the long run.

Something that you should do before you take another step toward your goal to create a website is to lock in your own, unique domain name. Often people will go out and buy domain names that are close and related to their own names, their business name and the name of products they may eventually want to sell. Claiming your domain name is sort of like trade marking the name for your business; it means that no one else will be able to make a website under that name while you own it.

The next step you should take in your journey to make a website is research, and choose a reliable web host. Most people don’t realize that the internet is just a series of files that are stored on giant web host servers. When you create a web page, you are actually creating a group of page files that anyone can access through the internet. These servers are expensive and very hard to manage alone, so instead of having their own, many people rent part of a server from a web hosting service. Some are more expensive and offer a louzy service compared to  others, so be sure to choose the one that’s right for you.

The hosting issue is very ‘on topic’ at present with Godaddy and some other web hosting companies having been infected with malware specifically targeted at blogs on shared servers – scary stuff for beginners for sure.

My view is that a self-hosted Wordpress blog hosted by a reliable hosting company with decent Wordpress security in place (you don’t need to be a geek to do that) is still the best way to get you, your company or your thoughts online.
